I learned on today that a very close childhood friend of my family passed away a few months ago and I'm not sure what hurts more knowing that I lost my friend or knowing I didn't do enough of being a friend while he was alive. I knew he was sick but I got so caught up in my own day to day life that I never reached out to him. Not once did I call him to say I'm thinking of you, I love you or even to say I'm praying for you and now I can't. William H. Bartels of Clinton Iowa.........my friend. I took so much for granted and now all I can do is ask God to be a better friend to you than I was. Don't let this be your mistake in life, don't let life pass without telling someone that you love them, that you are sorry for something you've done or even to say I forgive you. You don't have to be in each other's face everyday but take a minute and make a call...........I love you Billy, my dear friend

I grew up across the street from the Bartels (Locust), Billy and I were like brothers. I remember Mr. Bartels building that big fence in his back yard supposedly to keep us out of his cherry tree. Honestly, I believe it was to keep me from Debbie lol. Billy and I shared so much as kids that when I moved from Iowa to Philadelphia I looked forward to my visits back to Clinton and the expression on his face. I love you Billy and you will always be my best friend.

Back in the late 70's and 80's Bill was very good to my family with fixing our cars. You knew he would tell you the truth and would work with you if needed. He helped my family probably more than he knew, and it's still appreciated today. My condolences to the Bartels family. Life moves on the next scene but memories remain in the heart forever. I worked for O'Reilly Auto Parts for a short time and delivered parts to Bill. He was always in a good mood and we had fun kidding around. He was really a good person. He would always say to me "Hi Bill" and I'd say back "Hi Ed". Then we would both chuckle. I'm sorry for your loss. Yes, he will be missed.

Just as anyone who knew Bill, I loved that guy and was stunned when I heard of his passing. We were buds in high school and since; he always had cool and sometimes humorous cars, too -- like the old Chevy, "Spot." Also we worked together a few months in high school too, delivering appliances for "That Man McElroy" appliance store that was downtown -- that gig -- and just hanging out with Bill was always a blast! Never a dull moment with Bill, and I will miss him dearly. My deepest condolences to Val and family.

I am so sad to hear of Bill's death. I knew he was sick, but hadn't heard anything for awhile. He was such an awesome guy, always helping me with any car I brought down to the garage when I came into town, and my sons too, always ready to help any way he could. Sorry to hear of Bill's passing. After leaving Clinton for college in '67 I was able to keep up with Jiggs and Lillian and their kids through my folks, Jerry (Walt's brother) and Agnes Bartels. After they died we've kind of lost touch. I know that Billy was a great mechanic and Bartels Garage was a monument to Grandpa Herman, Bud, and Jiggs. As a kid we'd stop by and watch them work on every kind of car. Also remember the old garage across 4th street and the remodeling of the Book Bindery to make the "new: Bartels Garage. The years pass, but Bill's memory and my memory for other members of the Bartels family will stay with me. Cousin Ken in Oklahoma.
